CRIMINALS (2026-05-09)
In the Gifi system the CRIMINALS name is used for Discriminant Analysis by Alternating Least Squares. Like in all Gifi techniques the independent variables can have mixed measurement levels. The technique is briefly discussed in the 1990 Gifi book on pages 243–244 and applied on pages 477-485. No special purpose software was provided, however. The 2009 homals paper in the Journal of Statistical Software by De Leeuw and Mair mentions that the homals program can be used to perform discriminant analysis, but it does not go into details. It seems worthwhile to provide a stand-alone version of CRIMINALS that uses B-spline bases for the independent variables and provides special purpose plotting routines.
